Honeydew Ice Cubes

A good cocktail focuses on every last detail. The measurement, to the quality of alcohol, to the garnished used all dramatically affect the end result. But what is the true standard?

Well if its vodka or gin (I don’t know about those brown drinks, the standard on those is usually sickness) its served over ice, or at least shaken with ice. Now there is something that was not given much thought, the ingredients in the ice!

I made these simple and beautiful ice cubes out of a blended honeydew and two squeezed limes.  The first drink is a vodka tonic with the addition of the honeydew lime cubes. The cubes add a sweetness along with the usual lime flavor. It is a great way to revamp the classic.  The bottom drink is also a vodka tonic, but with a splash of cranberry juice. The colors work beautifully together and the tastes compliment each other really well.

On a liquid diet? Pureed fruits while you get your cocktail on! Lucky you.

PomPoms!

Well…I just finished telling you how happy I was that my room was completed. But then I was looking at the pictures I posted and realized there was an empty space in the cubby area.

I was wasting my day poking around online and stumbled upon these great super easy tissue paper pompoms. I have to admit the idea came from a nursery but I am fascinated by the same fluffy shiny things babies are so whatever.

Very simple:

For the large circle stack eight sheets of tissue paper (I used 20 x 20). For the smaller ones I cut four sheets of that same size tissue paper into quarters (10 x 10) and combined two stacks of the quarters to make two pompoms. Once grouped, accordion the sheets in 1 1/2 inch creases.

When finished, tie the center with a string. You can either cut the two edges in a half-circle or a point depending on the look of the pompom you are looking to achieve. The larger one is a point and the two smaller ones are circular.

Fan the creases out, and gently pull each one towards the center to hide the string. I used a ribbon to hang the pompoms from the ceiling.

Bedroom DONE!

It took some time, but I am finally done with my room!

I keep my favorite books, or at least the ones I am reading at the moment, all in one place for easy access.

I have no idea why I did not originally put the chest of drawers in this strange cubby area, it fits perfectly!

The knobs for the chest of drawers are a mix between new and old. The center blue ones are a new purchase, and the gold pulls are the original just spray painted.

These flowers I found while hiking on a nearby trail. They smell, and I am not even close to joking, like maple syrup on french toast. Smell like roses? Please, I rather have them smell like breakfast! They are perfect.

Green Thumb…

Though I love fresh flowers in the bedroom, it is often difficult to maintain healthy happy flowers. My bedroom receives absolutely no sunlight, which is a wonderful advantage on the days when it is warm, but not so wonderful for the pretty flowers who need plenty of sun to thrive.

Terrariums have been popping up everywhere lately, and are a beautiful mini-city of life. Because succulents require so little attention, even someone as forgetful as me can keep them alive and looking great. They do not need to be watered frequently because they retain so much water inside and do not require sunshine to maintain livelihood. Plus they come in a wide variety of colors, shapes and sizes so you can find the perfect one for you.

I picked that bag of prickly goodness at a local farmers market a couple weeks ago and they still look just as healthy as the day I got them! Though they sell much larger glass balls, I wanted three small ones to put in my room. I initially wanted to hang them from the ceiling but once I had finally filled them with the rocks (to help with absorption) and dirt, they weighed much more than I expected. So I simply tied a twine bow on top where they should have hung from and put them in my bookcase.

I found the extra succulents in my front yard. Once I became aware of what I was looking for, I realized there were succulents everywhere! The really thick leaves (which retain water) are an indicator of the plant. Add some marbles or pretty pebbles and you have your own terrarium!

Chevron Walls

Let me tell you I am the worst with prep work. It needs to be sanded? It needs to be taped? It needs to be dry? To all of that I say NO. NO. NO. NO. NO!!! It is not that I am lazy…well, maybe it is, but I just always assume I know how to do it better and quicker. And I am painfully impatient.

That being said, this may be worth all the prep work. Chevron walls are everywhere lately and I think the trend is pretty wonderful. You do need to do a lot of percision taping but the end results are so beautiful!

Here are a few great examples of how it instantly makes a room more interesting:

It looks best in subtle colors like grey and beige but if you want to be bold, BABY BE BOLD!

Penny For Your Thoughts?

How about pennies for your floors?! I don’t think I have ever thought anything was so amazingly awesome in my entire life! Obviously, Octopus Parfait is everyone’s favorite website, but my second favorite website, Apartment Therapy, posted a nickle tile floor bathroom remodel which I loved. Clicking through the post led me to a previous one which I loved even more– a penny tiled floor! The photos come from the Standard Hotel restaurant in New York.

Talk about AMAZING! Abraham Lincoln, come on in, everyone is counting on you.

New Sheets, New Room

The absolute easiest way to completely change up your room is by adding new sheets. Have dark grey? Go with a bright new hue! Have a busy pattern? Tone it down to a single color. Ta dah! New room! I had a very busy orange graphic pattern on my last duvet cover and needed a dramatic change.

My initial plans for the new room had ruffled sheets, but once I was actually shopping for them, I could not commit to something so frilly. I assumed I would get sick of them quickly, but did really like the idea of additional texture on the bedspread. I found these beautiful tiered white sheets from Ikea, Alvine Stra (the A in Stra had a little bubble over it, I don’t know how to do that on my keyboard but if you’ve ever been to Ikea I am sure you know what I am talking about). They add a pattern without adding more color which was my goal.

I also removed the box spring from under my mattress so I could expose more of the headboard and footboard. It was something that I never thought would make such a huge difference, but it really did. Once I removed it I realized the bed was obviously only intended to hold a mattress. I did have to add more wood planks underneath for the added support that the box spring previously provided, but the extra work was worth it!

Off the Wall

I am for some reason or another anti-jewelery box lately so I am instead looking for ways to display those previously hidden pieces.

On a recent trip to Crate and Barrel I found this beautiful gold flower placemat. Obviously, I have no need for a placemat in my bedroom redesign but I had been trying to figure out a way to put my necklaces on the wall in a way that made them belong. I had considered drawer knobs but I am having a hard enough time finding ones I like for my chest of drawers so I vetoed the idea of having to look for more. But this placemat is a great solution to that problem, bring all the necklaces together in a coherent way.

I had an old cork bulletin board lying around and decided to use it as the background to the placemat. I had initially wanted to just put the placemat on the wall but realized that would mean ten additional holes in the wall to hold up all the jewelry; this way there is only one nail holding up the cork board and my landlords :) and I are both happy.

Uncorking & Repurposing

Have you noticed your favorite wine and champagne bottles are now using twist off instead of cork? At first I thought it was just the cheapy ones, but then noticed even the more expensive bottles had started using twist off. Have you heard cork trees going extinct? Relax my little environmentalists, they aren’t, that is just a myth that has been going around. The real reason for the kick of the classic is it saves the wine companies money! Well, that, and cork fails about 2% of the time and ruins the wine. But corks classic! All hail classic! Who doesn’t want to hear that pop sound right before they pour a glass? Now you just hear the clicking sound of the screw cap breaking. Sexy.

That being said, corks are out and twist offs are in baby, but if you’re like me, you’re not ready to give those up just yet.

The varying dark hues of purples and pinks are so beautiful and I loved the way they went with my dark furniture. I filled two different sized rubber bands with as many corks as they would hold and then tied them in place with twine. Once tied, I removed the bands and left plenty of twine to play with later. I let the extra twine hang on the sides so it added a little more width to the length and balanced out the larger bottom. Once on the wall I covered the nail with a rosette of twine.

If you are not the biggest wine drinker, befriend your local wine bar or restaurant. They may have some corks they would be willing to give you.

Happy Friday!

I have been on a bit of a round kick lately so I wanted to share my favorite semi-round photo with you. I snapped this on a recent trip to Spain.

It is the making of a ferris wheel, what a beautiful day for a carnival.
